Plan a No-Spend Weekend to Jumpstart Your Savings!
Have you ever tried a no-spend weekend? What is it? Exactly what it sounds like – for a whole weekend, you spend no money (or spend the absolute minimum). It is a budgeting and money saving tactic.
No-spend weekends might sound both boring and difficult, but there’s a lot you can do without spending money and still have fun.
To make this daunting task a little more manageable, here are some quick tips:
· Pre-plan for this. Gather your ideas in advance for the things you can do for free or at minimal cost.
· Rope in a friend or two. Not only is this challenge much easier to achieve if you have support, group activities are more enjoyable and affordable than solo activities. You can plan with your friends to each contribute a minimal amount, and pool your funds towards a joint activity.
· Keep temptation at bay. During this weekend, avoid shopping malls and online platforms that you know often trigger you to spend.
· Think outside the box. Be creative with the activities you plan to make this engaging and enjoyable. Planning to sleep through the whole weekend leaves room for you to end up bored and restless.
· Reflect on your experience. During the no-spend weekend, think about your relationship with money and spending. Could you possibly improve this relationship?
So, what are some things you can do during your no spend weekend? Here are 20 ideas:
1. “Marie Kondo” your house. Sort through your things and plan to get rid of everything you no longer need. As a bonus, you can even sell some of your old stuff! MAKE money out of your no-spend weekend.
2. Plan a clothes-swap or book-swap with your friends.
3. Host a pot-luck with your friends. This is where everyone invited comes over with at least one dish and has a merry old time (you can ask them to bring along a drink if you want to turn it into a party). It is a great, cost-effective way to reconnect with your friends and at the same time enjoy great food.
4. Are you still fit? Plan to play a sport such as football or basketball with your friends or family. Alternatively, practice on your own for a couple of no-spend weekends and then surprise everyone with your skills!
5. Rediscover your skills. Are you good at baking? Maybe you used to love painting. Revisit some of your old hobbies. If you still have the skills and have fun doing them, maybe you could turn them into a side hustle!
6. Play board games with friends and family. Not only can this be fun, it also allows you to get to know your circle better.
7. Create a capsule wardrobe from the clothes you currently have. A capsule wardrobe is a limited selection of interchangeable clothing pieces that complement each other. So, what you get to do is mix and match your existing clothes to create outfits that will make you look and feel good. If you do this right, you will stop feeling that you have “nothing to wear” and can stop buying additional clothes you will never wear.
8. Plan a hike. Get your steps in while saving money.
9. Try a new recipe using only the items you have in your kitchen. You may even discover a great new meal.
10. Catch up on your reading. Do you have a pile of books you haven’t had time to get to? Crack open those spines! You can also download free public domain e-books and read some of the greatest classics.
11. Plan an at-home spa day. Give yourself a pedicure, take a relaxing bath and light those scented candles you never get to use.
12. Reorganize your house. If you’re a weirdo like me who enjoys cleaning and organizing, this sounds super fun! Rearrange your furniture and give your house a fresh look.
13. Try your hand at creating a digital product that you can sell. This could be an e-book, a guide, or if you have the skills, a mobile app.
14. Check out free events happening in your town. There are often bands performing or free art shows taking place all over town; but be careful not to end up spending on food and drinks at these events.
15. Catch up on your favorite podcasts and discover additional ones. If you are a podcast fiend like I am, take this time to catch up on all the episodes you have been planning to listen to, and also to hunt down more great podcasts.
16. Plan a movie marathon with you friends and family. You can watch those trilogy movies you’ve always intended to.
17. Visit a local park. The city has several free/cheap parks you can visit and experience nature. Try a boat ride even!
18. Take up some free online courses. Learn something new!
19. Binge watch some of your favorite shows or play video games. Do it in the name of your savings.
20. Organize your finances. You could double-down on your no-spend weekend by making it a full-on financial planning weekend. Organize your bills, go through your investments, plan you budget and set your future financial goals. You will come out of the weekend feeling positive and excited about your financial future.
A no-spend weekend is a great way to break spending habits and reset your relationship with money. With any luck, you’ll feel so amazing at seeing cash still in your account on Monday, that you will feel inspired to repeat the experience.
Now, go have some free/cheap fun!
